The Hampshire Ladies County Championships were completed yesterday with the championship final being played between Curtis Cup player Kerry Smith (Waterlooville) and our very own Flora Keites (pictured). Flora got off to the best possible start winning the opening two holes, but Kerry bounced back with wins at the third and fourth. She also managed to win the fifth after Flora missed a shortish putt - something that plagued her for the rest of the round. At the turn Kerry was two up. Flora had the chance to win a hole back, but missed the putt for a win. Kerry won the eleventh and the 12th was halved after another missed putt from the home player.

The 13th was halved in par. Kerry missed the 14th green to the left and Flora had finished over the back of the green. she played a fabulous chip and ended up some 20 feet away. Kerry then fluffed her chip. Her next effort was travelling and was looking to overshoot the green, but it hit the flagstick and dropped in the hole for a par 4! When the ball was travelling it looked like a 6 all day long! Now Flora had to hole a tricky 20 foot putt to halve the hole. She missed. Four down with four to play. Kerry missed the tricky 15th green to the right, whilst Flora nailed her tee shot into the heart of the green. Kerry played an excellent chip shot to four feet. Flora putted up safely for her par, but Kerry, drawing on all her international experience, holed her par putt to win 4&3.

A great final which had everything, superb ball striking; holed putts; missed putts; a chip in - all enjoyed by a crowd of in excess of 100 or more. Despite the loss Flora was upbeat as she knew she had played well all week, considering she has not played or practiced very much focusing recently on her 'A' Levels. A small consolation for her was the announcement at the presentation that she had been selected to play for the County in the forthcoming County matches week.

Whilst the Championship final was the main event yesterday afternoon, there were a number of other finals played over the last two days which did see some success for Royal Jersey. Sue Bults defeated club mate Lynne Cottignies in the Challenge Bowl for Silver Division players. Congratulations Sue!

There were also varying prizes in the different divisions, for the best nett and gross qualifying scores and all of these can be found on the HLCGA website - hlcga.com

The Royal Jersey Golf Club has received fantastic praise all week and this was re-iterated in the President's closing speech. She congratulated the condition of the course, the quality of the catering and the attentiveness of all the staff. She thanked the Club Manager for his work in liaising with the County Secretary to ensure everything ran smoothly. She singled out special praise for the team of Course Rangers.

The Management Committee appreciate that the course was closed for much of the week and would like to thank the members for their patience and understanding. the Captain and Committee would also like to thank the numerous volunteers that acted as starters and ball spotters and those that lent their trolleys to the mainland players.

Whilst there was undoubtedly some disruption for members, it is an honour for the Club to host these type of events and certainly this week has only enhanced the Club's standing and reputation in the UK.
